Volleyball – Glossary
Ace |
A serve that lands in the opponent’s court without being touched or is mishandled. |
Attack |
A forceful hit intended to score a point by sending the ball over the net into the opponent’s court. |
Block |
A defensive move where one or more players jump near the net to stop or deflect an opponent’s attack. |
Dig |
A defensive action, usually with an extended arm or dive, to prevent the ball from hitting the court after an opponent’s attack. |
Double hit |
An illegal action where a player contacts the ball twice in a row (except on a block). |
Kill |
A successful attack that results in an immediate point. |
Libero |
A defensive specialist wearing a different jersey, responsible for passing and digging but not allowed to attack or block. |
Middle Blocker |
A player specializing in quick attacks and blocking at the net. |
Opposite Hitter |
A player who attacks from the right side, often the strongest attacker. |
Outside Hitter |
A player who attacks from the left side of the court. |
Pass |
A fundamental skill using the forearms to direct the ball to a teammate, usually to set up an attack. |
Rally |
A continuous sequence of plays from the serve until the ball is dead. |
Rotation |
The clockwise movement of players after winning the serve back. |
Serve |
The action of putting the ball into play by hitting it from behind the end line. |
Set |
A controlled overhead pass using the fingertips to position the ball for an attacker. |
Setter |
The playmaker who delivers precise sets for attackers. |
Sideout |
When the receiving team wins the rally and gains the right to serve. |
