3×3 Wheelchair Basketball – Five Rules to Know
- Dribbling and Traveling Rule
A player must dribble the ball while moving. A player can push their wheelchair twice before dribbling again. If a third push is made without dribbling, it’s called a traveling violation. The ball must remain in control while dribbling.
- Game Duration and Scoring System
The game is played in a single period of 10 minutes. The scoring system is identical to standard 3×3 basketball:
- Field goals made inside the arc are worth 1 point.
- Field goals made outside the arc are worth 2 points.
- Each free throw is worth 1 point.
- Time Violation
The offensive team has 12 seconds to attempt a shot. A player cannot remain in the key (painted area) for more than 3 seconds without attempting a shot or leaving the area.
- Winning the Game
The first team to score 21 points or the team leading after 10 minutes wins the game. If no team reaches 21 points within the allotted time, the team with the highest score at the end of the period wins. If the score is tied at the end of the regulation time, the game goes into overtime. The first team to score 2 points in overtime wins the game.
- Classification and Team Balance
Players are classified based on their physical impairment with a point system ranging from 1.0 (most impaired) to 4.5 (least impaired). The total points of the three players on the court cannot exceed 8.5 points at any time to ensure fair competition.
